Redacting sensitive information from listing evidence
Protect privacy without cropping away the context needed to assess a claim.

Useful evidence does not require exposing every part of a screen. Decide what a reader needs to verify the particular claim, then remove unrelated sensitive information. Redaction is part of preparing the material, and it should happen before uploading or sending a file rather than after someone notices a problem.
Map necessary context and sensitive fields
For each image or document, list the details that must remain: account identifier, relevant metric title, period and capture date. Then identify private email addresses, phone numbers, customer names, billing details, private messages and access information. In a hypothetical revenue image, the amount and period may be relevant while a bank account number is not. Never include passwords, backup codes, session cookies or API credentials in evidence. Treat unrelated people's information carefully even when you have legitimate access to the screen where it appears.
Share aggregate evidence where it answers the question
A location summary or total enquiry count may provide the needed context without showing individual customers. Ask whether a redacted summary can support the claim before sharing a detailed record. Hypothetically, a campaign's aggregate results might be sufficient to explain a performance statement, while private messages from named customers add unnecessary exposure. Do not invent anonymized values to fill gaps; state what the summary includes and excludes. Minimizing the amount of information shared makes the evidence easier to review and reduces the chance of revealing irrelevant material.
Make the removal effective in the final file
Use a redaction method that removes the underlying sensitive content from the shared copy, then inspect the exported result. A decorative box, reversible annotation or loosely cropped preview may leave information accessible. Check all pages and images, including thumbnails and adjacent panels. In a hypothetical document, the visible account number may be covered while the same number remains in selectable text or another page. Keep originals separately in a secure location when appropriate. Do not send the working source file merely because its preview appears clean.
Explain redaction without making it suspicious
Add a concise note stating the categories removed and the context retained. For example, a hypothetical image can say that customer identifiers and billing information were removed while the campaign dates and aggregate results remain. Avoid suggesting that redaction authenticates the document or certifies ownership. If a reader needs more context, offer a safely prepared relevant view rather than sharing unfiltered access. Meta's security guidance reinforces the value of protecting access and recovery information. A request for secrets should not become an accepted research requirement.
Review sharing scope and updates
Check who will receive the material and whether each file is needed for the discussion. Keep a record of which redacted version supports the listing, with its date. If you discover a material exposure, stop sharing that version and take appropriate account-security action through the legitimate platform process. Hypothetically, replacing one screenshot should also prompt a review of older attachments containing the same information. Good redaction keeps evidence interpretable while protecting people and access details. It does not eliminate every uncertainty about the underlying claim or permission for a proposed transaction.
